Report from Southern Inter-Counties Cross Country by Karen Hazlitt:

Nine WADAC athletes ran for Hampshire in the Southern Inter-Counties Cross Country at a wet, windy, muddy Parliament Hill on Saturday.

Stuart Mccallum, fresh from his victory in Coutances came a credible 36th (10.26) in his debut at Parliament Hill for the U13 boys. Louise Warwick ran a very strong race to lead her Hampshire team home and finish 5th (16.04) in the U15 girls, and coming home with a Bronze team medal. The ever improving Fenella Langridge came 11th (19.49) in the U17 girls, and was part of the Silver medal team. In the U17 boys Callum Brown finished 17th (17.02) on what was now becoming a very muddy course. In the U20 women, Charlotte Bates was 7th (23:06). The Hampshire Senior Ladies team, made up entirely of Winchester runners, took team Silver, with individual Bronze going to Kath Bailey (21.52), followed by Karen Hazlitt in 6th (22.00), Emma Patel in 14th (22.51) and Michaela Mccallum in 18th (23.07). In the U23 Men's race Gavin Smith had a storming run to finish 4th (33.35).

Another Winchester runner, Andy Greenleaf had entered under the Club name and came an impressive 29th (35.10) in the London Championship Mens race.

Updating Senior Report

Since the first Hampshire League XC  League fixture at Farley Mount I am pleased to report on the Club’s travels to the National Road Relay Championships in Sutton Coldfield (21st October), the National XC Relays in Mansfield (4th November) and most recently the second Hampshire League  XC League fixture at Goodwood (11th November).

Having qualified last year for the Road Relays for the first time, our men were delighted to make the trip again. Four of the “Class of 2005”, Phil Killingly, Ian Hardcastle, Andy Greenleaf and Matt King, were joined by Julian Mann and Adem Omar to take on the best the country could throw at them.

It was great experience for all 6 as they shared centre stage with the likes of  Mo Farah, Michael East and a host of other seasoned internationals. With a running order of Phil 51st (18-57), Ian 60th (20-06), Andy 61st (19-34), Matt 51st (19-22), Julian 47th (19-45) and Adem 47th (20-35), ours was a really pleasing result.

Unfortunately we did not take a Ladies team, with other high profile local events in the offing, and so it was only Emma Patel who travelled with the men, to run the first leg of the (4 by) women’s relay, which she ran for the experience of running in such a high profile and quality race.

Helen Clitheroe “won” the first leg and such was the quality on that first leg that Louise Damen, a regular at Club training sessions, finished 5th on the leg and 8th fastest overall. Therefore Emma certainly wasn’t hiding from anyone, when she stood on the start line. With only herself and me and the rest of the men that travelled, screaming at her, to motivate her, she ran well and came away with a positive performance finishing 30th with a time of 15-27 which compares favourably with last year’s time of 15-31 when she was running under the pressure of being part of a very competitive team.

It had been hoped that we would have a men and ladies team competing at the National XC Relays but a combination of injuries and the travelling distance ultimately meant we did not finish teams in either. What did happen though, was that Kath Bailey in the Ladies (3km) and then Julian Mann and Alex Pritchard in the Men’s (5km) experienced the atmosphere, the speed and the pressure of the athletes travelling around them and the superb setting for such a spectator friendly course.

Unfortunately I have not been able to obtain times for the legs they ran, but all 3 really enjoyed the occasion, with Kath flirting with the top 20 on her leg and I have to say I ran out of fingers and toes as the men sped by, in order to count Julian and then Alex through.

And so to Goodwood and although the sun shone, there was a definite biting wind to greet the athletes on this firm but undulating (aren’t they all ?) course.

Having witnessed Sarah Burgin simply run away from the rest of the Under 17 girls field to win by a clear 15 seconds it was always going to be a tall order for our ladies and then our men to follow suit. Jo Kelsey gave it a go though and committing to the race earlier than she did at Farley Mount, she was the last to succumb to Aldershot’s international junior Steph Twell. Jo eventually had to settle for 3rd  (20-35), leading home the Clubs’ other scorers Natalie Cain 9th (21-27) and Karen Hazlitt 10th (21-35). This placed the team 2nd with our other stars being Under 20, India Lee 13th (22-15), Michaela McCallum 19th (22-41), Jan Ross 29th (23-41), Joy Radford 74th (26-45) and Esme Ireland 90th (28-58). We also achieved first veteran’s team.

An interesting statistic from the men’s race was that Steve Phillips was the sole Winchester survivor from the men that toed the line at Farley Mount. 10th on that occasion, this time he improved to 7th (28-37)and was our 2nd finisher behind Chris Powner who was an excellent 5th  (28-11). Next home was Julian Mann 29th (30-26), closely followed by Ian Hardcastle 35th (30-45) and Simon Stevens 44th (31-19). This was a fantastic team performance for 2nd place, an improvement from 4th in the first fixture. Then finished veterans Pete Spelman 109th (34-27), Phil Manly 138th (35-43), Ian Leedham 173rd (37-28) and James Clune 177th (37-44) and this placed them 8th in the Over 40’s standings.

All best wishes to those travelling to Liverpool for the UK Cross Challenge & European Trials on 25th November. Otherwise, a date for your diaries is the next Hampshire XC League fixture at Ashe Meadows, Overton on 2nd December.
