Cross Country - CC6
The next CC6 is on 21st February at Kings Inclosure, Stoney Cross. As this is jointly organised by Romsey and Winchester it is expected that Winchester will supply a fair proportion of the marshals for the event (5 or 6 usually suffices). So long as we fulfill our commitment for marshals, there is no reason for us not to compete in the event; a good men's result here will put us in a great position to win the overall men's team event.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to take part because I am busy all that weekend; so, I would be very grateful if one of the regular (or not so regular) CC6ers could take over as CC6 Manager for the day. All you will need to do is organise the team of marshals and return the results if any of our runners compete; I'll forward any information from Romsey as soon as I get it. Thanks, John Walker.

Welsh Castles Relay
While the days are short and chilly, it's time to think about mid-summer and our annual trip to Wales for the amazing Welsh Castles Relay. For those not familiar with the event, it is a series of 20 separate (10 mile) races strung across the country from Caernarfon Castle in the north to Cardiff Castle in the south. WADAC have recorded some fabulous performances over the years, with numerous stage wins for both men and women and our ladies team winning the event in 2006.Read more

Cross Country Championships 9th January Cancelled
It is with great regret, but no surprise, that Hampshire AA Executive Committee and the Race organisers have jointly decided to cancel this year's Cross-Country Championships on Saturday 9th January. We are conscious of the many miles both athletes and officials will have to travel in extreme road conditions to attend. The safety of athletes and officials was paramount in making this decision. We regret that the Championships cannot be held this year and look forward to your support in 2011. See Athletics Hampshire web site.

Juniors - Training Cancelled Thursday 7th January

Road Running - TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS FOR RYDE 10
The Ryde 10 is on Sunday 7 February at 11 a.m. The club covers the cost of the ferry crossing. If you want to take advantage of this generosity, please get to Portsmouth Harbour, next to Portsmouth Harbour train station, by 8.45 a.m. at the latest. This allows us time to purchase tickets (always a big queue as so many runners) on your behalf and to benefit from the 2-for-1 offer currently operating. Club members should assemble in the area on the far side of the ticket office and newsagent, and make themselves known to the ticket purchaser. It is a short walk from the end of Ryde Pier to the start and race HQ. Ferries back are at 10 minutes past each hour.

Cross Country - CC6
This Sunday the 3rd race in the CC6 cross-country series takes place at Fritham Inclosure in the New Forest - details at www.cc6.co.uk. Unfortunatley, I may not be able to attend and if I do I will have to leave immediately, so I won't be able to gather the results. Please can someone volunteer to gether the results and either email to me or Martin Loveless (martin.loveless @ btinternet.com) (copy to me). Here is the spreadsheet I use to enter the results into prior to sending it to Martin. I suggest it is printed off and additional names added as required. London Marathon Places
We have three guaranteed club entries in to the Virgin London Marathon 2010 for those who may be interested. As in previous years the places will be issued to athletes who meet the following criteria.
  1. Have been a WADAC member for at least 1 year
  2. Have been rejected through the ballot system for the 2010 marathon
  3. Have run at least 5 ‘league’ races over the past year (or so!) these may be RRL, XC, RR10 etc.

If there are not enough people who meet all the set criteria to fill the places then it will be opened to all applicants so if you are keen to run it is worth letting me know. The places will be issued at the Christmas meal and recipients will be decided by a draw if the places are over subscribed.

If you would like to be entered in the draw please send me your name and brief confirmation of which criteria you meet (just for fairness! I’m happy to take your word for it!) to secretary@wadac.org.uk. Put LONDON MARATHON PLACES in the subject so I can pick it out amongst the junk mail.

Wednesday Night Social Run
The Social Run is held on Thursday evenings and meets at the running track and is very popular. To accomodate runners who miss the old Wednesday night slot or can't attend on Thursdays a group will now begin meeting at River Park on Wednesdays at 7pm either just outside or in reception, depending on the weather! This is not intended to become too formal and currently there will be no pre-run notices or announcements, which will remain on a Thursday at the track. Please come along if it fits your schedule. I’m sure we’ll soon get some different pace / distance groups going. Depending on how many people attend it is expected that there will at least be one group doing 8-9 minute miles and another doing about 7 minute miles, which will be building up to one hour.
Sports:Hall 2009 has been a great year for Track and Field and Sports:Hall Athletics in Hampshire. I am pleased to announce the final Sports:Hall of the event is taking place on 16th December, with the Christmas Grand Prix. Father Christmas will be attending, and there are prizes for all athletes participating ! We are hoping for a large entry, athletes are welcome to invite friends to compete - please see attached 'flyer' for the event. Please let me know name/ age- group of entries as soon as possible(and by Friday 11th December latest). Kind regards, Michael Coker. See grand prix notice for details.

Christmas Meal
Tickets for the Christmas meal at Winchester Tennis & Squash Club on 10th Dec are selling fast and the Club must confirm final numbers by 2nd Dec - if you haven't paid by then I'm afraid there won't be a place. George Hide will be at the track on Thursday evening and next Tuesday to take names and collect money. The cost is £11.50 and includes 2 courses, a glass of mulled wine, coffee, quiz and great company. In addition if you want to run beforehand you can park, change and shower at the Tennis Club before the meal. Rachel Byers and Michaela McCallum are also collecting money/names. Please don't miss out because you didn't get round to buying a ticket! If you can’t get to training, George can be contacted on 01962 842108.
Trophies
As some of you may know, Alan has done a fantastic job for many years co-ordinating the collection and engraving of the club's annual awards. Alan is now ready to hand over the baton and we need someone to collect trophies and take them for engraving (paid for by club). The awards evening will be held at the end of March (date and venue tbc). Team Managers and Coaches are aiming to finalise the award nominations by end of January (with exception of xc, sportshall and road running) and the trophies will need to be gathered by the end of Feb. Without help the club could lose it's awards night so if you feel this is something you can do please contact George. This is a great opportunity for those who would like to help club but perhaps not sure about the coaching and management side. Great chance for someone with no sport knowledge!

Also, if you would like to take on overall organisation and co-ordinating of the nominations please let us know. In the meantime any comments/suggestions - send them to Michaela, who will oversee it for this year but keen for someone else to take it on in future. Ian Berry has kindly agreed to produce a souvenir booklet as last year which was a big success. Any help welcomed! Coaches and Team Managers: we will be looking for submissions in January!

Alternative Tuesday night sessions
From now on we can offer an alternative Tuesday session for anyone, of any standard, who wants a structured session but who cannot do Alan’s Teg Down/Magdalene Hill sessions. They’ll either be on the track or the grass. We particularly welcome anyone who’s been running regularly for a few months and wants to start incorporating a quality session into their week. (Be brave - we’ll look after you!) They’ll be led by Karen Hazlitt and/or Lou Walker and will start at the normal times (6.30 own warm up jog, 6.45 drills). Road Running

Road Running
Bright, clear and windless conditions greeted the WADAC party at Sunday's Amsterdam Marathon. The beast of 42.2km was kind to some, but so cruel to others. Karen Hazlitt was our undoubted superstar. She won the FV40 category herself, and also takes credit for coaching Lynette Porter - winner of the FV45 category. Ian Berry and Karen paced one another and were inseparable all day. First WADAC finisher home was Justin Corrie with a 8-minute PB to record a stunning 2:51. Malcolm Green and Neil Beacher proved their ability with apparently effortless runs at sub-3-hour pace until they both suffered badly from cramp and were forced to slow. Lou Walker was also denied her deserved sub-4 with the same issue. Steve Goodwin's amazing 3:10 result vindicates his superman endurance abilities. The entire WADAC team flew home with broad smiles, fabulous memories and many new marathon stories! Results listing.

Quadkids League Results
After Winchester Quadkids' resounding victory at the final league match on home ground, it has been announced that we have come in 3rd place behind Slough and Oxford City after all 4 league matches. This is a fantastic achievement for the club, and also for the athletes who all put in great perfromances with many PBs across the four events. A reminder that I am still accepting names for the 29th August Quadkids match in Basingstoke. Please e-mail me. Also, a WADAC Quadkids home match in Winchester will take place on Thursday 10th September, cost is £1 for Years 5s and 6s (ie those who have just finished Years 4 and 5). Turn up at 6.15pm for 6.30 start, no need to prebook. Karin Gray.

Quadkids 12th July-Poole
A full team of 14 came a very close 2nd place to Slough (only 3 points behind!). This follows on from the June excursion to Andover where WADAC came in first place! We have the final match of the season in Winchester on July 26th. Full scores to be shown on Quadkids website once they have been independently verified. A very well done to all athletes - a fantastic achievement. Please see Tom Reid's excellent photos. Contact Karin Gray if you need to know more about the Under 11s Quadkids events.
Young Athlete League
Sunday 19th July saw WADAC host the final round of the National young Athletes league Division 1 at the new University Sports Stadium. In very windy conditions the clubs athletes produced some fantastic performances and delivered their best result of the season to finish 2nd Team on the day.

Whilst the club did well overall the individual performance on the meeting went to Calum Upton who won the U13Boys 1500M in a time of 4:47.3 to achieve a National Grade 1 perfomance and move up to 13th in the National Rankings. This was an exceptional quality race, with 5 national standard times achieved in spite of the conditions and Calum confirmed his position as one of the leading middle distance runners in his age group in the country by pushing the current No1 in to second place.

Other notable performances on the day were Jack Walker 1st in U15B 1500M, Jack Mitchell 1st in U15B High Jump, Rebecca Knapton winning the U15G 1500M and Willam Ratner winning the U13B Shot in his debut for the club. Each of these were also National Grade 3 standard performances.

After the match there was a club club celebration BBQ to mark the end of the season and a graduation for the older athletes who will pass to the senior ranks next season.

Andy Greenleaf Wins JPMorgan Chase Corporate Challenge
The JPMorgan Chase Corporate Challenge is an annual global running competition for teams from companies. The London event takes place in Battersea Park and is run over two July evenings due to its popularity. It provides a sociable evening of running in London, some corporate hospitality and raises a great deal for charity. The field can get very dense as it snakes its way around Battersea Park and along the Thames, with a wide range of abilities and runners jostling their way through gaps in crowds of slower participants. No such problems this year for WADAC runner Andy Greenleaf, who was representing Bank of America Merrill Lynch and blasted round in 17:22, winning the Thursday night event. With teammate Ben Reynolds coming second their male team won the London Leg of the global challenge. Read more about Andy's race at the event web site.

National 6/12 Stage Road Relays – 18 April 2009
Photos now available thanks to Moyna Lee and Andy Greenleaf.
It was another great day for the Club at the National Road relays. The women, who first competed in 2006 have been remarkably consistent with their times and continue to enjoy a glowing reputation nationally:

For the men, this was a new adventure, great experience for everyone, especially the juniors who, are the future of the Club, but it is to the older statesmen that I really am particularly grateful. A number of real team players ran gruelling long legs and without them, we would not have had a team, so my praise really does go to them. See the press report from Coach Dave Kennedy.

Track and Field
I am team manager for the Southern Women's League 2009. The first match is on 25th April. There is a good range of events both track and field. It is fairly near by in Horspath, near Cowley, Oxford. It would be great for us to move up to Division 1 so in order for us to do this we need as much participation as possible. You DO NOT have to have experience of track and field events previously to participate and is a great league for both novice and more experienced track and field athletes. If you are interested please take a look at the timetable of all the events and send me a brief email letting me know you are interested. If travel is a concern I can sort out ways/groups of people so we can lift share. For more information see www.swtfl.co.uk. Thanks, Emma Patel.

To crown that, on Sunday morning, Norman Wilson of Team GB informed her that she had been selected to represent Great Britain in the team event of this competition - her first GB vest! Well done Sandra.

Twelve Winchester and District athletes ran in the national schools championships, with some amazing performances and Rebecca Knapton earning her first England vest. Well done! For full details, see the race report from coach David Vosser.
Jurassic Coast Challenge
Most runners preparing for the London marathon plan a long weekend run of 2-3 hours in these vital weeks before they taper their training for the race. Cleo Oliver, however, went a little bit further this weekend, coming 3rd Lady in the 3-day, 82 mile Jurassic Coast Challenge. Despite a cruel four mile detour to avoid a landslide she managed to shave five hours off last year's time and come 15th overall in a field of 149. After that, the marathon should feel like a fast flat sprint!

Sportshall
Very well done to the WADAC athletes who contributed to Hampshire achieving its best ever Sportshall performance on a National stage: 2nd out of over 50 counties in both U13 girls and U15 boys is a phenomenal achievement. Particular congratulations to Robert Ellis, who came 2nd overall in the U15 boys. See AVIVA results page. Report with more details to follow.
The Toughest Foot Race on Earth
Our close friends and fellow WADAC members, Michaela and Debs and Sarah will soon be jetting off to Morocco, for the Marathon des Sables - known as the "toughest foot race on earth". Their challenge is to run across 151 miles of desert in six days, maintaining a pace fast enough to avoid being caught by the sweep "vehicles" (four camels!). They'll face fierce heat and have to carry everything they need for the entire trip (except water, issued each day). They'll even be offered their share of the organisers' 27,000 Compeed plasters!!

To have one WADAC runner in this race would be incredible, but for WADAC to have an entire team, indeed the only all-female team, is a truly unique event for the ladies and for our club. See the MDS run MdS team website for more information. Follow the race live (photos, results, etc) and send messages to the runners on the event site, see an example roadbook from the race.

Finally, please consider helping our team mates to reach their fundraising targets by supporting their charities. They are close to their targets, and a little help from each of us will make a world of difference to those worthwhile causes benefiting from this awesome challenge. Please learn about their chosen charities and donate online via their MDS website or see Michaela after she returns, or see Ian Berry at a training session.

The race starts after a hearty breakfast on Sunday 29-March, and ends on Saturday 4-April, with Morocco being in the time-zone as the UK. Our collective willpower can only help the girls in making history for our great club. Good luck to our team "MDS Run MdS".

Vacancy - Club Secretary
After 6 years as WADAC Club Secretary, George Hide has indicated that he will be stepping down in April. George’s contributions to WADAC will be greatly missed and as a result this will leave open a Main Committee position which is vital to the smooth running of the Club.

The role handles all of the club general correspondence as well as attendance at the Main Committee meetings – co-ordinating the Agenda and taking minutes as well as contributing to the discussions and decisions. It is estimated that this will involve 8-10 meetings per annum (2 hours each) and up to 1 hour per week on general admin.

We are looking for someone who is not only good at admin (with access to PC, Internet etc) but also who is interested in the overall development of the club as part of the Main Committee. The role is subject to election at the AGM in April but if you think can help us shape the future of WADAC then why not find out more by contacting:

Welsh Castles Relay
I am organising the WADAC team(s) for the Welsh Castles Relay this year. At the moment I am waiting to see if we have enough men and women to have 2 separate teams , if not 1 mixed team at least. The event is held over 2 days starting in North Wales and finishing at Cardiff castle. The race has 20 stages therefore we need 20 runners and a few reserves. The race is a highlight in the running calendar, and takes place this year on Saturday and Sunday, 13th and 14th June. This event takes a lot of organising therefore please can you email me ASAP and by Friday 9th Jan letting me know if you are keen to run. I realise it is several months away and hard to commit to a race so far ahead but all I need is a quick email saying you are keen to run. Emma Patel.

Huge congratulations to the Winchester ladies who braved the sub-zero temperatures and thirty miles of hills at yesterday's Doyen of the Downs cross-country race from Arundel in West Sussex.

Michaela McCallum ran a perfect strategy, looking comfortable over the entire route and taking a well-deserved victory in the ladies' race. She finished just ahead of Debbie Coslett, followed by the pair's Marathon des Sables teammate, Sarah Frost. Demonstrating she's just as comfortable in the cold as the heat, Cleo Oliver took fourth place - after a nail-biting sprint for the line to beat the fifth-placed lady. Cleo's training partner Zayne Crow finished close behind to complete an amazing showing. See Ian Berry's Photos.

WADAC MEMBERS NEEDED FOR OLYMPIC PROCESSION IN WINCHESTER
Sunday 24th August is Olympic handover day when Beijing pass the Games to London. Winchester City Council are organising a festival in Winchester to celebrate and would like WADAC to be part of it all. They are seeking at least 30 members to take part in a drumming procession which will march down the High St and end up at the Guildhall. The event will start at 11am with a drumming workshop and culminate in the procession which will end at 4pm. Throughout the day there will be events at North Walls and Gavin Smith (new Community Athletics Coach) will be heading up a WADAC stand (Gavin is seeking 2-3 coaches to help him on the day). Adults and Junior members welcome although juniors would need to be accompanied by an adult. Club vests or GB kit (if you have it) to be worn. If you are interested in taking part please contact Gavin Smith ASAP.
University of Winchester Freshers Fayre
WADAC has applied for a stand at the University of Winchester Freshers Fayre on 27th Sept (9-4)and we need a co-ordinator and volunteers for this year. It involves gathering a list of and managing the volunteers, displaying info about the club (we have a club stand), seeking out a few freebies, eg last year we had nibbles in form of "GO bars" kindly donated from Alton Sports. It is a fun day and you can decorate the stand as you wish, organise what is on it etc - nobody need commit to all of it but it does need someone to pull it all together and it would be great to have as many different areas of the club represented as poss. Any offers? Please contact Jackie Ducker, who has kindly volunteered to coordinate this.

Cape Wrath Marathon
Malcolm Green & Steve Goodwin recently travelled to Durness on the North West coast of Scotland to take part in the Cape Wrath Marathon. This off-road marathon, described as "what could be the toughest marathon in the UK", is unusual is that you are ferried by a motorboat to the start, then commence the race in small groups, by running to the Cape Wrath Lighthouse and back (22 miles). The race clock is then paused briefly while competitors are then ferried back, for the start of the final uphill 4.5 miles to the finish in Durness. Malcolm finished in 3rd position in a time of 3:25:02 & Steve was 15th in 3:50:48. New: see photos from Cape Wrath.
Marshals wanted
- Race for AAIR
We need marshals for the WADAC-hosted Race for AIIR (8th June). The most important aspect of any event is the safety of the runners , officals and the public and to meet this requirement we require people to act as marshals around the course and within the start and finish areas. In addition helpers are also needed to hand out medals and water to incoming runners. As well as raising funds for the club and more importantly Asthma Allergy Information Research (AAIR) this years race incorporates a Hants Road League Race the 10th and last run of the series. To volunteer please contact Ernie Chambers.
- Race for Life
The Race for Life (1st June in Winchester) also needs marshals and has asked for help from club members, and have offered a promotional stand for the club at the event. To volunteer as a Marshal at the Race for Life, please contact Hannah White, Area Event Manager - Race for Life at Cancer Research UK.

Help WADAC to Secure £50,000 Funding from Norwich Union
WADAC has an opportunity to secure £50,000 funding from the Norwich Union via its Join Our Team initiative. To do this we need your votes to move our bid from its current position of 10th place in the South East, with a total of 169 votes.

Normally you only get one vote, but if someone who has already voted sends you an email request to vote and you use that then they get a bonus vote! To take advantage of this two for one scheme I will be sending nomination emails to club members throughout May asking them to vote.

This is how it works:

  1. I will send a vote request email to club members.
  2. If you receive an email message from "Norwich Union Sports Fund" with the subject title "Your friend has invited you to help a sporting initiative", and you have not already voted, please follow the instructions in the email message to register and vote for our initiative.
  3. By voting in response to my message you will entitle me to another vital bonus vote.
  4. Once you have registered, and if you have already voted, please use the Join Our Team web site to contact friends and family and ask them to vote.

Please do vote once you hear from me and use the Join Our Team website to invite as many relatives, friends, and colleagues to vote.  NU have clear terms and conditions and you can opt out from receiving any follow-on messages from them. If you have not received a request to vote from me by the end of May then please click here to send me a message and I will nominate you.

This is a heaven sent opportunity to do something for the club by getting funding for what we do.   My sincere thanks go to Jackie Ducker and Michaela McCallum, without whose help our original submission would not have been selected. Many thanks in anticipation of your good work and anticipated efforts on behalf of the Club. Ewan Simmons, Sportshall coach.

Completing a sub 3-hour marathon is an achievement to be proud of, but doing this twice in eight days is truly remarkable. Flora London Marathon 2008
This year's Flora London Marathon was another great event for Winchester and District runners. Toby Lambert was the 4th British man home in an amazing 2:18:40, Phil Killingly and Andrew Greenleaf were both under the 2:30 mark, closely followed by Julian Mann and George Hide. Ian Berry, Debbie Coslett and Kaye Mansbridge all came in under 3 hours. Joy Radford had a great run, the fastest runner in her category. Jonathan Kane was 4th in his category.
According to Athletics Weekly (17 April) Winchester men's team was provisionally assigned third place in the London Marathon (Phil Killingley, Andy Greenleaf, Julian Mann). That is an excellent result if it is confirmed. Results for Winchester and District and associated runners.

The Hampshire and IOW Sports Awards 2008
The Club's Ladies Endurance Section were nominated for Senior Team of the Year at the Hampshire and IOW Sports Awards 2008, held on 2nd April at the Rosebowl.

The team, represented on the night by Louise Damen, Michaela McCallum, Kath Bailey, Emma Patel, Lucy Elliot, Kaye Mansbridge and Karen Hazlitt, had been nominated in recognition for their success in 2007, particularity their National and Southern Cross Country Titles, and their UK and AAA's half marathon and 10 km success. Up against 3 other teams including Havant and Waterlooville FC for reaching the 4th round of the FA Cup the girls thought they didn't have a chance, how wrong they were! After wowing Roger Johnson with tales of endurance, he announced that they are the winners for 2008.

Michaela Mccallum was nominated for Senior Volunteer of the Year, narrowly missing out to David Ball from the IOW. However Michaela did not miss the opportunity to extol the virtues of the Club and the benefits the new track will give to us all.

Club member, Pete Spelman's Mum won the Veteran Sportswoman category for her 3 Gold medals at the World Masters Track and Field Championships in the 5000m, 10,000m and 20,000m walks (seen in the 3rd photo).

Jurassic Coast Marathon
Congratulations to Christian Burge, who completed the Jurassic Coast Marathon last weekend. Here is his race report:

The event took place in less than perfect weather, in fact it started on Saturday night in such driving rain and a blustery wind that the race was postponed after 8 miles because we were being blow over along the cliff top in the pitch black and the Met forecast was for storm force winds overnight!

The event resumed at 5:00am and the distance reduced to just over 50 miles. Blazing hot by the end of the day and a totally awesome day, although my wife doesn't necessary agree! Feel a little stiff and sore and missing a few toe nails otherwise feel fine and a little lighter!

Finished the whole thing, 59"ish" miles in about 11:40 (official results aren't out yet). Total altitude climbed: 3,987 meters (equivalent to climbing up the empire state building 9 times!!!) Total descent: 4,013 meters Finish position: 11th, 35 people entered in total with only 16 finishing.

AGM
With Christmas over and Easter on its way, it must be time for the club's AGM.

This year we've decided to separate the AGM and awards night. A social event is being organised for Saturday 26th April during which our annual awards will be presented - more details later.

This year the AGM is being held in the Milner Hall - part of the St Peter's catholic church site between Jury Street and St Peter's Street in Winchester. Pedestrian access from Jury Street opposite the new Discovery Centre or from St Peter's Street. Parking available behind the Discovery Centre or in the Gordon Road car park (on the way to River Park).

In line with the club rules, any nominations for the posts of Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer need to be with the Secretary by the 3rd March. A statement signed by the proposer and nominee stating that they are prepared to be appointed needs to accompany all nominations.

The AGM is an important event in the club's year and we hope to see as many members as possible on the 10th March at the Milner Hall.

Please Support the Club to Bid for up to £50,000 Norwich Union Funding
Ewan Simmonds, with the help of Jackie Ducker and Michaela McCallum has put together a bid to seek funding through NU's "Make Local Sport the Winner" initiative, which has been accepted. The principle is simple. Please:
1. Go to the website www.joinourteam.com
2. Enter a Winchester postcode (If you use Ewan's, SO225DU, the WADAC bid comes up first)
3. Click on "vote for us"
4. After that, follow directions as given. You will be asked to either "log in" if you have already registered with NU previously. If not you will be asked to register, if you have not already done so.

Your first vote may then give you the right to contact three friends. If you do this you get another "free" 3 votes. It is the only way you will get a second vote, because your email address is recorded the first time you vote, and you cannot vote again.

Please do vote and pass on your message to 3 friends (thereby getting 3 more free votes) before asking friends, relatives, colleagues, fellow students ..............etc to log in, vote for us, and send emails to three friends etc to get 3 more votes.. You can continue to do this as long as you have the energy!!! This is a heaven sent opportunity to do something for the club by getting funding for what we do. Don't delay - vote and act now! My sincere thanks go to Jackie Ducker and Michaela McCallum, without whose help our submission would not have been selected.

Many thanks in anticipation of your good work and anticipated efforts on behalf of the Club.

The above event, the third year it has been running, will take place on Wednesday 5th March at Sparsholt College. This was a WADAC initiative and has been well supported by the local primary schools, giving many children their first taste of real cross-country. The event has even led to recruitment of some of our juniors and schools setting up running clubs. This time Year 3's will be able to compete for the first time (8 and 9 year olds). Sparholt students assist with the planning, set up and marshalling on the day and members of WADAC usually provide some assistance. If you are available on the afternoon of 5th March (1230-4pm) and would like to help, please contact me using the wadac volunteers email address. Teams run all 20 legs, with each team member running between 8-13 miles, from flattish to very hilly.

For the last two years we have fielded a men's and a women's team, and it would be good if we could do the same in 2008. Generally, lifts can be shared and we have had a minibus in previous years which has had a great atmosphere. Most people camp on Saturday night, but there are some bedrooms where we camp, and obviously some people make their own arrangements. Entry costs £13.75 each, and we've always had a t-shirt for finishing the leg, plus we have had quite a few leg winners (and a ladies' team overall win in 2006), so it's good value!

At the moment, we are just trying to establish what interest there is out there, to see if we can make up one or two teams. I've set up an e-mail address specifically for this event, so if you would like to know more/would be interested in running please e-mail with your contact details and your availability, by mid February, and we’ll go from there. Thanks, Angela Mann

London Marathon Accommodation
I am currently in the process of enquiring about a group booking in a hotel in London for the Saturday night before the London Marathon for runners and supporters. I have spoken to Steve, who organised this for a group of people from the club last year and he said how well it worked and how good the hotel was, so I am making enquiries into doing the same thing this year using the Thistle Kensington Palace/Park, opposite Kensington Gardens/Hyde Park.

The idea is to arrive in London relaxed after travelling up by train, check into the hotel, then go for an evening meal in a recommended Italian restaurant nearby. On the morning of the race, get breakfast in the hotel and taxis to the start (the least stress and walking the better!. Then after the race take a walk / crawl / piggy-back (for about a mile) back to the hotel. The hotel even had showers available for the group after the race last year.

Please contact me using this email address (advised not to publish personal address on web) if you are interested and would like me to book a room for you? Last year the group rate was £100 per couple for a double/twin room with breakfast, so I am hoping for something similar.

Thanks, Sue True.

Cross Country - Bolbec International Cross Country Meeting, Normandy, France, 25 Nov 2007

"The Groupement Athletique de la Basse Seine – the GABS, hereby invites WADAC to the 45th Bolbec Cross-country event, at the Thomas Tetlow stadium on Sunday 25th November, 2007. Participants should be no younger than “Minimes” (aged 13/14 as determined by their age on Sept 1st 2007), with mix of competitors/managers/supporters kept to 33, owing to the limited private, hotel or hostel accommodation available"

Until a few years ago WADAC regularly took teams (all age groups) to the above event (kindly organised by Graeme Lowndes). This year we have received an invitation to once again participate in what used to be an annual fun/competitive club outing. This is one of Europe’s top cross country races which attracts many top international athletes. WADAC started going to this meeting in 1992 and did so for 10 years until the races were suspended for a few years. This was a highlight in the x- country calendar with some memorable results from Winchester athletes. However, here’s the catch….it requires someone to organise it! This is obviously at very short notice for this year but if by chance a few willing volunteers are keen to seize the opportunity and someone is happy to co-ordinate it then please contact volunteer@wadac.org.uk before 31st October. Otherwise we will politely decline and maybe keep it in mind for next year. is near Le Havre so very convenient for the Portsmouth crossing.

If there are just a small number of competitors it may be possible to arrange travel with another participating club or the organisers who have a coach.

Work Starts on the new Track!
Celebration of work starting on the new track
On Weds 8th August (coincidentally one year from the start of Beijing Olympics), members of City Council, University, WADAC, Meridian TV, Win FM, Hants Chronicle were present to witness Joy Carter (vice-chancellor of the University of Winchester) cut the first turf for the track at Bar End. Loud cheers (esp from WADAC!) rang out as the JCB swung into action. The project is underway and is on target for completion Spring 2008. Although this ends a 25 year campaign for a track in Winchester it is just the beginning for us as a club - it will be fantastic to have a base from which we can all get to know one another, develop all aspects of the club and look ahead to some major successes in track, field, cross-country and road running.

Wincheser and District's new King of the Mountains Congratulations to Andy Greenleaf, who had his first taste of Fell Running last Sunday by winning the Skiddaw Fell Race from Keswick. Not bad for a first attempt at the 9 mile race with 2800 feet of climbing and descent in 70 minutes in pretty bad weather.

Web Update As you can see, I have updated the design of the WADAC home page. I will be applying the new design throughout the site, starting with the most frequently updated pages, over the next few weeks. During this period some pages that have not yet been updated will have no navigation bar.

Once it has been applied, the new design will make it much easier to update the web site as it separates the content from format. It will also allow people to link directly to their favourite parts of the site such as http://www.wadac.org.uk/juniors. This change builds on the existing structure, content and colour scheme. It will take some time but will hopefully create a modern looking, uncluttered site that should also be easier to navigate once the update is complete. I hope you enjoy it. Thanks, Tom Reid, web maintainer.

Road Running Grand Prix

The Winchester teams had yet another fantastic season in the Hampshire Road Running League. Both the men’s and women’s A and B teams finished in the highest possible position. The A teams finished 1st in the A league (division 1) and the B teams finished 1st in the B league. In addition the men’s C team finished 4th in the B league. The number of WADAC women entering each of the races was sufficient to merit Winchester entering a women’s C team next season. Had we entered a women’s C team this season I am confident that they would have finished in the highest possible position: 2nd in the B league behind the Winchester B team.

For a number of years now the club has operated a Grand Prix to encourage runners to enter the HRRL. The winners of the 2006/07 Grand Prix have now been decided - see the prize table.
Prize 2006/07 Winner
1st man George Hide
2nd man Simon Stevens
3rd man Mike Davies
Vet 40 man Peter Spelman
Vet 50 man Steve Goodwin
Vet 60 man Jonathan Kane
1st woman Katharine Jones
2nd woman Rachel Byers
3rd woman Emma Patel
Vet 35 woman Shona Crombie-Hicks
Vet 45 woman Joy Radford
10 out of 10 Rachel Byers

Two further prizes, for most improved man and most improved woman, will be announced at the Grand Prix award ceremony. The date, time and venue of this ceremony have yet to be decided. Congratulations to all the prizewinners and a big thanks to all the runners who turned out to the races and helped Winchester reign supreme. Two further tables give the full details of the Grand Prix points for all the 62 men and 43 women who took part.

Totton 10K ROAD RACE 15 April 2007 - WADAC Men and Ladies Crowned Hampshire Road Race League Champions

The Totton 10K last weekend was the last race of the Hampshire Road Race League, which comprises of 10 races. The unseasonably hot weather made racing conditions more challenging for the competitors. However, this did not stop the Winchester and District A.C. Men and Women's teams from having yet another successful day.

The overall race winner was the Club's John Beattie, in a superb time of 30 mins, 54 seconds.  We was followed home with some more great positions by Steve Philips 6th. in 32.15, 7th Nick Anderson in 32.18 and 10th, Matt King in 33.10, giving them a well earned 1st place in the Men's team event.  The B and C teams also had great strength with 22nd Simon Stevens, 26th. George Hide, 29th.Mathew West, 31st. Julian Mann, 48th David Knapman, 43rd. Mike Davies, 70th.Nick Letchworth and 73rd Peter Spellman.

The ladies, not to be outdone by the men, had great success by winning the team event for the 9th time. The team was led home by Kath Bailey in 2nd place, in an excellent time of 35minutes 26 seconds, supported by 3rd Barbara Yff in 36.36, and 7th.Georgia McNichol in 37.27. The B team also had a good result with 8th. Emma Patel 37.44, 9th Debbie Coslett 37.57, 16th. Jan Ross 40.48, 20th. Rachel Byers 41.22, 33rd. Sue True 43.50 and 37th.Gina Hardman 44.29. The depth of the lady runners in the club has resulted in a choice of 15 different members to score in the A team throughout the season.

It was a proud moment for retiring Team Manager Alan Coveney who has helped build the teams from scratch over the past 10 years. Today's  Men and Women's victories, combined with their previous League successes, meant they were crowned the overall Hampshire Road Race League Champions . In addition  they also won both the B Divisions in the League a superb feat for the Winchester and District A.C. runners and  something no other club has achieved..

English National 6 Stage Road Relay Championships

Fresh from their staggering performance in comprehensively winning the Senior Ladies team title at the National Cross Country Championships last month where 5 of their runners placed in the first 27 finishers, it was perhaps natural to anticipate another huge result for Winchester & District A.C. at the English National 6 Stage Road Relay Championships held in Sutton Coldfield. Especially, as it was felt that the travelling team were stronger in depth than last year's silver medal winning squad.

However different athletes running styles favour different surfaces and this was not cross country but road and a much shorter course to run for each athlete compared to the more endurance suited cross country distance. There were therefore other athletic clubs who were also confident of their team's chances to excel and this intensified the excitement before the event.

Rachel Townend got the team off to a fabulous start in oppressive hot and almost windless conditions that were a major consideration for all the runners. Returning from injury that blighted her winter season, Rachel completed her leg in 8th place (17.04) of the 70 entered teams, perhaps 10 places higher than was expected of her. Karen Hazlitt followed with another eye catching performance (16.39), as she lifted the team into second spot, and this position was maintained as half way was reached through Kath Bailey (17.01) with another solid run.

Next in the spotlight was Scotland's Commonwealth Games marathon representative Shona Crombie-Hicks and with the 3 other most favoured Clubs all within approximately 1 minute of Shona, it was expected 2nd position would come under threat and so it proved as Shona, running to form (17.56) slipped to 4th spot. Hopes were then pinned on Louise Damen, who was the Club's "in form"¯ runner. However, being slightly under the weather, and in the heat, her challenge for one of the leading times of the day was not to be. She did however lift the team back to 2nd, (16.27), the fastest of the Club's sextet. With the strength of the leading Club's at this year's event hotter than for some years, the Club's final runner, Jo Kelsey had an incredibly tough challenge and her gutsy performance (17.11) and the girls combined heroics proved not enough to secure medals this year, as the team wound up 4th.

This was however a fantastic performance, nearly 2 ½ minutes faster than their effort last year, and with the 9th quickest time in the 8 years the event has been held, it was in fact remarkable, that the team's achievements on the day were not more suitably rewarded.

The "B" team of Emma Patel (17.57), India Lee (17.59), Kaye Mansbridge (17.48), Jan Ross (19.30), Sue True (19.50) and Rachel Byers (19.57) also ran superbly, as Emma and India who both ran last year, improved on their times and collectively the team skirted just outside the top 10 teams, finally placing 18th. Perhaps most significantly though, they were the second "B"¯ team, just 7 seconds shy of the leading team and this cemented another proud day for the Club's endurance runners.
