HARDLEY  HALF MARATHON ROAD RACE

In the second race of the season  in the Hampshire road race league , Winchester and District A.C. runners participated in the Hardley half marathon, an undulating run around the New Forest. With fewer people available to compete  for the club,  it was doubtful whether the teams could repeat the league double wins at the previous race meeting at Overton. However , the women excelled themselves , with Katherine Jones finishing second (first veteran) , in 1 hour 27 mins , as a  preparational  race for the New York marathon next month. She was supported by Sarah Reid in 16^th. and Carol Francis in 23^rd. for this team win. The Womens B team also did well for a  B team league win ,with Fran Gay 34^th.. Esme Ireland 38^th. and Shirley Dyson-Laurie 58^th.

In the Mens race , first home for the club was Mike Davies in 29^th. in  a good 1 hour 23 mins. , supported by Steve Goodwin 44^th. , new club member Will Clarkson 45 th., and Tony Britten 52nd. for a pleasing 3rd. team place. .The B and C teams were led home by Andy Smart 58^th., Andy Tremain 93^rd. ,Bill Reed 117^th. ,121 Derek Smith, 167 Bernard Bennett, 171 Paul Roberts 182 David Morgan and  234 Sam Smart.

The Half marathon was also the County Championships and some of the Winchester runners came away with County medals for their achievements. These were  Veteran category medals for Katherine Jones and Esme Ireland received Gold, Fran Gay  -Silver and Steve Goodwin –Bronze.

The next league race is in November and is the Lords Hill 10 mile.

OVERTON 5 MILE

Winchester and District A.C. Roadrunners started their season with the presentation of last years trophies at the Overton 5 mile road race last weekend. The Women won the league and the Men were second in another competitive season.

This years road series started with an excellent double win for the Winchester men and women at this 5 mile race, which as usual was very hot and humid over the well organised Overton village course . In the Womens race Karen Hazlitt continued her excellent form to win the race in a superb 28 mins.36 seconds. She led home the rest of the winning team with some good performances from 2^nd. Debbie Coslett 30.11 ,4^th. Georgie Benson 30.26, 5^th.Emma Patel 31.21, 21^st. Carol Francis  ,32nd. Amanda Wilding 32^nd.,37^th. Esme Ireland , 39^th. Vicky Bartlett,and 40^th. Deborah Perry.

The mens teams were another great success, with some close packing from the runners to narrowly beat Southampton into second place. First home was Andrew Greenleaf  in 5^th. place in a very good 26.34 , close behind was Matt King in 7^th. in 26.50 , then Jason Perry 12^th. and Jeremy Braines 26^th..The Bteam was led home by Mike Davies 48^th. , Steve Goodwin 83^rd., 85^th. Alistair McNichol ,97^th. Andy Smart,99^th. Peter Spellman, 104^th .Paddy Clark and 106 Andy Carton..

Not to be outdone in the days successes , some of the Young Athletes in the club ran in the 2.5 mile race around the same course. With brilliant runs Sean Davis won the Boys event and Hannah Vosser won the Girls , now both hoping to do well in the coming  cross-country season ,which starts in October.
