Road Running Training Days and Descriptions

Day Time Place

Run

Tuesdays
6.45pm - Check the road running / endurance calendar for details
Meet at Bar End Track Club House (6:40 warm up; 6:50 drills and training session)

Quality Sessions – Endurance repetitions in the summer usually based at Bar End Track, either on the track or on adjacent grass. Speeds range from over 8 minutes per mile to about 5 minutes per mile, but it is not a problem to run faster or slower, or miss a few reps. The endurance speedwork will include a range of distance repetitions from 200m to 1 mile, or even threshold work. The volume will range from 5k to 8k.
In the winter there is usually a session on quiet roads (round the Cathedral or Teg Down in the autumn and Harestock Jan-Mar) but before a race this reverts to the track.
There is also a separate session for 800/1500m racers often on grass next to track

Wednesdays
7.00pm setting off at 7.10pm from River Park first floor concourse

And

Thursdays
6:45pm setting off at 7.00 from Bar End Track Clubhouse

“Social Run” These runs are an opportunity to find out who runs at your speed and distance. Chat, find out who wants to do what at the weekend, and who you want to run with and when. The club operates new-member support (like a buddy system).
Routes range from 3 miles to about 10 – at varying speeds. Usually groups set off at different speeds and distances ‑ try a few groups but identify yourself to people in that group and they will look out for you – just make sure that if you want to change group or go back, you have told someone as they might search for you. If you find that the distance you want is short but the speed is right for the longer distance – talk to us, we’ll find you a cut-off point.
In the summer we spread out by the river and over the hills.  In the winter we have to keep closer to streetlights.
There is usually a structured session doing threshold work on Thursdays.

Saturdays
8.00 am outside River Park

These are usually long slow runs (very chatty about 9½+ minutes per mile but this includes stops to discuss route etc) and leading up to the marathon, can be 3 hours long. However, we often manage to organise a route so that some can cut off at various points, doing shorter runs. Discuss before setting off into the distance please.

Saturdays
9.30 am Farley Mount

Hill sessions – by arrangement

Sundays
8.30 am outside River Park

Postponed at present – needs new leader – faster group.

Many, BUT NOT ALL, runs can be adapted to allow for different speeds/distances – check before setting out please.

New members wishing to improve are most welcome – suggest they start with Thursday evenings.

We have several qualified coaches. We have runners who run the various distances/speeds, who are very happy to run round with newcomers.

There are also Hampshire Road Race League races, CC6, RR10 (summer Cross Country) and Cross Country races in Winter, vets events and loads of others. You’ll find club members doing such things as the Tough Guy, Grizzly, Terminator, Race the Train, Race the Horse, Welsh Castles Relay, Test Way Relay, Christmas pudding races and duck pond waddles – not to mention tri-, bi- and du-athlons, a quite a few Ultras etc. There are usually a couple of trips abroad to run in races (some go to enjoy good wine). There are pub meals, social and theatre trips. “Chatterbox” is our monthly newsletter and we have a website. There is also a “google-group” for mass emailing. Then of course other parts of WADAC organise training and events for youngsters and track and field. If you are training for a particular race, eg a Marathon – there is advice and training from club members and your coaches – PLEASE ASK – we are a friendly club and aim to stay that way. Please also speak to our Club Coach, Alan, (Winchester 882719) with any questions.

See Directions page for more information about all locations identified here.

NB There is no parking at the track. Runners MUST park at the Bar End car park also called Barfield Park and Ride (free after 6.00 pm), the entrance is off the mini roundabout next to the ATS garage. The pedestrian entry to the track and grounds is the other side of the mini roundabout, where a gate will be open. The clubhouse is on the left on entry to the track area.
