Vets
This seasons major change is that men are now
considered vets in the Hampshire and Surrey Vets League on attaining
the age of 35 in line with the women. So both sexes of 49 year olds
experience the unfairness of competing against an athlete 14 years
younger! Equality at last! At major championships there have always
been competitions for each 5-year band. The reason for not taking up
10-year age bands from 35 was because of the weights of the throwing
implements which change at 50, 60, 70. The feeling that there should be
10 year bands from 35 and keep to the existing weights ruling will be
put forward for next year to the ruling body, there are more runners
than throwers, so democracy should have it’s say!
The other change is the introduction of
Stubbington Green Road Runners men to the league, so we will lose
persistent middle distance winner Tony Allen, and Mike Chapman who has
been a real versatile force for us for many years. We thank them for
the considerable services to our club and wish them well. It appears
that the Navy are no longer part of the competition, and the women’s
league have been joined by Camberley AC.
