HRRL Race 7: Ryde 10 Mile Results
In spite of the leisurely 11am race start time the added fun of the ferry crossing necessitated a relatively early alarm call. The majority of our twenty two runners gathered in good time at Portsmouth Harbour ferry terminal and after a short crossing and an only slightly shorter stroll to the canoe club we collected our race numbers and jostled for a bit of indoor space to pin them onto our vests.
n Jogging up and down the breezy sea front to warm up revealed the strange phenomena that the wind seemed to always be in your face irrespective of your direction of travel. The race went off without a hitch after a slight adjustment of the start line to avoid the worst of the puddles by the lake and then came the hills...
nSarah Gurney was our first lady home, deservedly winning the 1st F45 award with an impressive time of 01:08:42. Sarah Shedden and Penny Freeman made up the remainder of our A-team, picking up the 2nd F40 award and 1st F35 respectively. Penny put in a particularly strong performance, earning a 10 mile PB on this most unlikely and undulating of courses. In spite of carrying a slight injury Susy Perry still won the prize for the 2nd F35 and was the first of our B-team finishers. Lynne Whitaker was next, winning the award for the 1st F55 and Emma Carter completed the team.Jo Curtis got the 2nd F55 prize, Shirley Dyson-Laurie the 1st F65 and together with Carrie Oliver made up our C-team.
n
nSarahs Gurney and Shedden with Penny Freeman also won the award from the race organisers for the second ladies team overall, only beaten by the youngsters from Southampton AC. However, as has happened a number of times this season, our ladies A-team were the first finishers in league A-Division-1 because the Southampton team currently reside in Division-2. This means our ladies A-team retain their perfect score so far this season and remain well clear at the top of their league table. Our B-team again finished first of the teams in their division and similarly maintain their perfect league score and significant lead after seven races. And the ladies C-team remain second in the same division having finished the race fifth out of those fifteen club teams. It is looking more and more likely that the Southampton ladies team will be promoted to Division-1 for next season at which point they I think they will be give our ladies a run for their money (literally).
n
nSimon Stevens again led our men, impressively finishing in under an hour and winning the award for the 2nd M45. James Moore, George Belfield and Chris Setters made up the rest of our A-team, with George seemingly un-phased by the hills and doing particularly well to gain a 10 mile PB.Steve Oliver, Lloyd Dickson, Saul Duck and Stephen Lowy were our gents' B-team and Mark Wilson, Dave Walker, Rob Bowler and Jonathan Kane our C-team.
n
nWith the men's A-team finishing fourth of the A-Div-1 teams they stay fifth overall in the table after seven of the twelve races. Our B and C-teams finished sixth and tenth respectively of the fifteen teams in B-Div-1 and so currently stay third and thirteenth overall.
n
nHuge thanks to everyone that ran. The Ryde 10 is always a bit more of an undertaking than the other races and the club really appreciates those that committed their time and energy to ensure not only that we had sufficient runners to fill all six teams but that we also had some very highly commendable results and prize wins.

nThe next race is the always busy Eastleigh 10k on 19th March followed by Salisbury 10 on 9th April. Both are still open for entries and we are particularly in need of more WADAC runners at Salisbury please.https://www.fullonsport.com/event/hendy-ford-eastleigh-10k-2017/profile
