About Under 11 Academy
The U11s Academy aims to introduce School Years 4 and 5 children to running, jumping and throwing. It is extremely popular, with a waiting-list in place for joining.
Training Sessions
The U11s Academy outdoor groups train on the athletics track and grass. They will learn how to run properly by performing drills and will focus on a wide range of events including 75m, 600m, long jump, shot, javelin, vortex and cross country.
Training sessions take place at the track on Bar End Road in Winchester on Tuesdays or Wednesdays or Thursdays during term time 5.30pm-6.45pm. Each athlete will be in either the Tuesday group or the Wednesday group or the Thursday group, not a combination of any or all.
Please park at Barfield Close Park and Ride, which is free.
Competitions
We encourage all athletes, regardless of ability, to take part in all competitions including Sportshall, cross country and quadkids competitions.
It's a great way to put all those new skills into practice and gain confidence in competing. The emphasis in competitions is on doing your best and enjoying it. We find that the athletes really enjoy putting on the black and gold vest and representing WADAC.
In the summer, the children compete in QuadKids competitions in which they must take part in four events:
75m sprint
600m run
Long jump
Throwing the vortex
Times and distances are converted into points which are added together to give a final score.
There will also be indoor competitions such as sportshall and indoor track and field meetings at Lee Valley.
In the winter, there are a some cross-country events for U11s. The main cross-country events are part of the Hampshire Cross-Country League and Wessex Cross-Country League series. There are also ad-hoc events which we will notify the athletes about from time to time.
We are a competitive club and expect our members to compete in at least 5 meetings each year.
If an athlete does not compete for the club over a reasonable period of time and there are no legitimate reasons why such an athlete is unable to compete, the group coach will ask the athlete to leave the group so that someone else from the waiting list can join the group.
Athletes who compete for the club will be given priority over non-competing athletes when allocating places for other groups.
