WADAC Winners at Thruxton
WADAC has a number of very competitive multi-sport athletes and many more who occasionally dabble with the dark side.....the Thruxton Mass Attack event on 22nd October provides a great opportunity to explore your multi-sport envelope.
nIn many ways a perfect setting - local, closed aerodrome racing circuit so truly no traffic, perfectly smooth tarmac, sweeping racing bends, no road furniture or white lines, transition in the pit-lane, the running legs are on the race track as well, proper state of the art timing with more splits and stats than you can handle. Sure there is a bit of undulation (some might call it a hill) and it is exposed to the wind and weather...
nOn Sunday it was bright and sunny and blowing a hooli - great fun despite the worst that Storm Brian had to throw at us and lovely to see the Black & Gold WADAC tri-suits out there in the mix.
nThere are a couple of road races in the programme - it really is a fun opportunity to run on the track and many take the chance to enter into the spirit by wearing costumes. Our Secretary Ian J Berry-Bowers posted a sparkling 37'55 in the 10k race - well deserving of his age group win (4th overall) and a fantastic performance considering the wind-drag there must have been on his Batman Cape
nWe had three WADAC athletes contesting the longer "Standard Distance" Duathlon (3 laps 11.4km run, 10 laps 38km bike, 1 lap 3.8km run) and were delighted to have Simone Dailey romping home in 2h0m31s (you do the maths) for 4th overall and 1st lady. Tim Smales was just behind 5th overall in 2h02m23s to win his age group and take 5th overall. Rob Bryan was our third home in 2h27m22s for 32nd overall (out of 133). All great results - in that wind the standard distance is much more of a marathon endurance event and makes for a tough day out.
nWe also had three WADAC athletes contesting the more modest "Sprint Distance" Duathlon (1 lap 3.4km run, 5 laps 19km bike, 1 lap 3.4km run). This was something of a family outing with Tom and Helen Oliver making their first attempts at the Duathlon discipline and Steve supposedly being the old hand with all the tricks! Predictably enough this event went to form with Tom posting some cracking run splits to finish 8th overall in 1h06m20s, Helen working through the field on the final run leg to be 17th overall and first lady in 1h12m47s. The old man came home 21st overall in 1h13m25s - not too shabby considering there were 128 competitors.
nAll great fun and well worth having a go at this duathlon lark.....but beware, the dark side can take over your life!
