WADAC junior distance-runners excel at Hampshire League cross-country fixture

n
nIn the opening U11 race, WADAC’s nine girls, many of them
nmaking their first appearance at this level, achieved one top-ten finish (Caitie
nCroft 7th) and four more in the top twenty.
n
n
nFor the U11 boys, James Lewis picked up where he left off
nlast season, leading from gun to tape and storming to another impressive win.
nHe was ably backed up by four team-mates in the top eight places (Tom Grote,
nEvan Jeremiah on debut, Harry Gaster and Stan Parkinson), and a further fourteen Winchester runners.
n
n
nPerformance of the day however, was from Rose Chesterfield,
nwho showed just how much difference a good year’s training can make. Having finished
n47th in the opening race of last season, Rose was perhaps not
nuppermost in the analysis of potential race-winners this time round. But,
nhaving positioned herself nicely on the back of a leading group of five in the
nearly stages, Rose emerged in pole position from the woodland section of the
ncourse and never looked in danger as she raced home clear of the field to win by
n9 seconds, ever so slightly to the delight of her watching coaches. There was also
na good run from Millie Burgess (16th) and from Winchester’s other five
ngirls, resulting in the team securing fifth place on the day.
n
n
nIn the U13 boys race the WADAC team were just edged out of
nfirst team place by Aldershot, but also just pipped Southampton to second
nplace. Winchester’s scoring runners (Harry Harvey, Charlie Kyle and Michael
nShingleton-Smith) all finished in the top ten, with Ben Chesterfield and Thomas
nBriggs making it into the top twenty. There were good runs also from a further
nten Winchester boys.
n
n
nIn the U15 girls race, Hannah Foster’s good from continued
nwith a 15th place finish, supported by Issy Beck and Lily Neate,
nwith the girls securing third team place between them. Well done as well to our
nother three girls in the race.
n
n
nFinally, in the U15 boys race, Doug Scally and Sam Roberts,
nin their first year in the U15 age group, both achieved good places (11th
nand 17th respectively) and together with James Medley (23rd)
nalso attained third team place for the club. WADAC had three more runners in
nthe race, all making good first Hampshire League appearances.
