Records tumble at WADAC's Super Sunday
No fewer than 6 club records were broken with 10 other all time top 3 performances recorded in a great show of strength from the club's athletes as the season opened in style on our home track.
nImproving both inclusion and the club's performance standards are key objectives for the club's committee, and both of these were demonstrated as over 200 of the club's athletes turned out to compete, many of them performing at a very high standard.
nA report on the QuadKids competition was given yesterday along with results by age group, so U11 performances are excluded from this report, but it was great to see all the U11 athletes turn out on the day.
nThe day started with some great performances in the hurdles and a wind just above the legal limit prevented these being eligible for records, but the U20 men's 110m hurdles saw a very close race and was just under the 2.0 m/s legal limit at 1.9 m/s meaning Oliver Thatcher's (coach Andy Fisher) time of 15.68 was good enough to go 2nd on the club's all-time rankings. Despite the wind there were notable performances by Grace Weeks (Gary Bettridge) in her first run over the 75m hurdles and Grace Colmer (Andy Fisher) in her first run over the 80m distance.
nThe first event in the field was the shot putt which saw no fewer than 8 PBs. Next event in the field was the first of 3 long jump pools and U13G Lucia Bertacchini (Andy Fisher) went to 3rd on the club's all time LJ list with a leap of 4.27m. Next on the grass was a fine Hammer competition which saw new U20 and Senior women's club records for Tamsin Hoult (Martin McBriar) with a throw of 31.04m. Sam Clifton (Jeremy Clifton) broke the club's U20 record to top the UK rankings with 51.83m and Jasmine Gordon (Martin McBriar) set a new PB of 34.68m to go 2nd in the club's all time list. Next in the field was the high jump which was made difficult with a freezing wind into the jumpers' faces, but despite this there were 6 PB performances.
n Back to the track for two 3000m races which included an eye catching time of 9 mins 11.34 from U17 man Harry Wilson (Nick Anderson) who goes to 2nd on the clubs all time 3000m list. Next on the track were a series of seven 100m races all but the first of which were over the legal wind speed limit. This first 100m race gave the opportunity for septuagenarian Moira West to break her own V70 club record with a time of 16.02. The other races saw wins for Harry Gittens (U13 academy), Grace Weeks, Poppy Shroff (Andy Fisher) and Harry Crosby (Andy Fisher).
nAfter a break for lunch, the discus was next in the field and this saw a new club record for U15G Erin McBriar (Martin McBriar) in a new PB of 27.83m which is also good enough for 2nd place in the club's U17 & U20 women's lists. Just 40cm behind her was U15G Rosa-May Sprake (Gary Sprake) who went 2nd in the all time U15G rankings and 3rd in the U17 & U20 rankings. Erin's sister, Abi McBriar (Martin McBriar) also threw a PB of 23.44m which took her to 2nd place on the club's all time rankings. Next in the field was the women's javelin which also saw Abi McBriar throw a PB of 24.82m to also claim 2nd place in the club's all time javelin rankings.
nAfter lunch on the track were two 300m races and a 1 lap race and in the second of the 300m races U15 girl Arabella Wilson (Andy Fisher) ran a quick time of 41.28 to take over a second off the club record. The last events on the track were six very competitive 800m races and these included some notable times put down this early in the season from U15 boys Ruben Price (Nick Anderson) & Will Atkins (Nick Anderson), U13B Seth Noott (Nick Anderson), U17M Ollie Withers (Mike Chambers) and U13G Poppy Taylor (Nick Anderson).
nFinally 2 further long jump competitions took place in the field and this resulted in a leap of 7.18m for Harry Crosby which takes him 2nd on the European U20 lists and goes 2nd on the club's all time U20 rankings and 3rd in the senior men's rankings. Arabella Wilson went joint 2nd in the club's all time long jump list with 5.06m. In the last event of the day, the men's javelin, there were no fewer than 9 PBs, including a throw of over 30m with the 600g for Harry Jones (Martin McBriar).
n The club hopes to arrange some further open meetings throughout the season and watch this space for further details.
