Youngsters make flying start
The sun shone as the club hosted the first of our lower age group YDL matches on Sunday. Currently in division 2A of the Southern structure of the league (effectiely division 3) the club is hoping to win promotion this year and took a giant leap to doing so by winning the first of the league matches by a huge margin.
nThis league is for U13 & U15 young athletes and the victory is even more remarkable when you think many of the athletes taking part are in the bottom year of their age group and will still be available to compete in the same age group next year.
nThere are far too many amazing performances to mention but perhaps the best part of the day was that victories came in all disciplines and across different training groups whether they were throw, hurdle, sprint, jump, vault or endurance running.
nSpecial mention should go to those who broke club records on the day and these were Lily Flute (coach Andy Fisher) who became the first WADAC U13 girl to go under 20 secs for the 150m earning herself a top 5 UK age group ranking and the U15 girls 4 x 300m team of Poppy Taylor (coach Nick Anderson), Isobel Jordan, Lucia Bertacchini & Gracie Osman (all coach Andy Fisher) who broke the club record and as it stands today sit proudly at the top of the UK age group rankings.
nOther notable mentions should go to Martin McBriar's throws squad who put in fine performances in hammer, javelin, discus and shot with U13G Darcey Thorne-Henderson and U15G Abi McBriar both finishing themselves in the UK age group top 10 and the 800m & 1200/1500m runners from Nick Anderson & Paul Cox's squads respectively who dominated the middle distance events. Samuel Smith (coach Elias Mtshweni) was the first vaulter to represent the club in this league for a number of years and did so with distinction, winning the U15B event.
n In this busy time of year, the next match takes place in Bournemouth on the 21st May.
