Sportshall Match 4 Portsmouth

Winchester & District Athletic Club young athletes took part in the final Hampshire Sportshall League match at Mountbatten Centre Portsmouth to end one of the best ever season for WADAC in this League. Both the Under 11 Girls and Under 13 Boys team have dominated their categories and their rewards are to be both overall Team League Champions which has been an excellent effort. In addition the Under 11 Boys and Under 13 Girls teams both ended up in 3rd position in their team standings.

nThe WADAC Under 11 girls have been magnificent this season and as well as winning the team prize they also took top awards in the Individual aggregate positions. Despite missing the final match through injury Beth Thorpe capped a superb season by finishing 1st overall and with Emma Shedden 2nd and Jasmine Jones 4th WADAC were dominant. On the day Emma Shedden performed very well in all 6 events to take first place with best result being 2nd best time in the 3 Lap race. Jasmine Jones again supported in style and was 7th on the day. The team was completed by Anisha Mathema 16th and Grace Cahill 18th , both these girls have improved so much this season. On this occasion WADAC were nudged into 2nd place by New Forest Juniors but won the title due to the 3 previous team victories. Other WADAC positions were Jemima Sullivan 21st Isobel Hollick 22nd Clara Woodhouse 31st Emily Hoad 32nd Grace Weeks 37th Talya Wright 45th Katya Orchard 50th Lucy Smith 66th . The 4x1 Lap team of Shedden, Jones, Sullivan and Hoad were 3rd The Winchester B team finished 6th overall out of over 20 teams.

nWADAC Under 13 Boys have been on top all season and again easily won their team event on the day and inevitably were overall Champions. Doug Scally who the day before had competed for Hampshire at the Inter Counties Cross Country Championship (83rd U13B), was again very consistent and was 2nd on the day and also 2nd overall for the season. The scoring team were Charlie Foster 5th Sam Roberts 6th and Iwan Wrey-Brown 7th . In the Individual medal Speed Bounce event Doug Scally and Sam Roberts were joint winners with a performance of 86 bounces in 30 seconds. Overall Wrey-Brown was 3rd Charlie Foster 6th Sam Roberts 7th and Ted Culley 14th.

nThe Under 11 Boys were forced into 4th team on the day in a very competitive event but had done enough in the previous matches to give themselves 3rd place in the overall team prize. Billy Brackley has been excellent all season in an individual category with some equally talented athletes and was rewarded with 2nd place overall for the season. Billy was already Hi-Stepper champion from the previous match and he managed the best Speed Bounce 57 in 20 seconds to win that event also. Euan Holm has improved in all events this season and he managed a solid 8th position on the day and also a very good 6th place overall for the season. Stan Parkinson was 14th on the day and 12th overall, Stan has one more year in this age group and so could see great things from him next year. In his first ever match Daniel Durney in 30th did really well to complete the scoring team. Other team positions- Ripley Thomson 32nd Alex Nicholson 35th Jake Chapman 37th Zachary Simmons 38th Zac Weatherup 42nd. The team of Brackley, Holm. Parkinson and Thomson were 2nd in the 4x1 Lap relay

nFreya Brannigan has been really consistent this season and she was 4th position on the day and also overall in the Under 13 girls group. Her best performance was the 2nd best time in the 4 Lap just one tenth of a second short of the best time. Grace White was 5th on the day and 6th overall for the season and bounced her way to 2nd best Speed Bounce total. The team were 3rd on the day and the same position overall. Amelia Watt 20th Lily Neate & Katie Nicholson equal 21st Jessica Manning 23rd and Isabella Steven 24th were WADAC other performers.

nIn the Under 15 Girls individual event Serena Charles was 3rd on the day and 3rd overall and Sophie Torrance 4th on the day and 5th overall. Alina Eichhorst was unfortunately not able to compete due to injury.

nThis was undoubtedly one of WADAC’S best seasons and it bodes well for next season with many of the athletes now experienced in Sportshall and so should look for more success in the 2017/18 season.

nWADAC had representation for Hampshire at the Under 13 and Under 15 Sportshall Regional Championships at Burgess Hill with Freya Brannigan Grace White U13G , Doug Scally, Iwan Wrey-Brown, Sam Roberts, Charlie Foster U13B , Serena Charles, Alina Eichhorst and Sophie Torrance U15G.
