WADAC athletes bring home 4 medals from English Schools Champs
The incredible year of track and field success continues as the club's athletes returned from the English Schools Championships in Manchester with 4 medals; the most in its history.
n13 athletes from the club made the trip, in itself a record, with the young athletes competing over all 3 days of the weekend.
nThe senior boys & girls (U19s) competed on Friday and Harry Crosby (coach Andy Fisher) won silver in the very first field event of the day, the men's long jump, with a leap of 7.15m. Next in action was Oliver Thatcher (coach Andy Fisher) who finished a very respectable 7th with a jump of 1.92m in the men's high jump. To round off the day, Sam Clifton (coach Jeremy Clifton) finished 6th in the men's hammer with a throw of 53.39m.
nIt was the intermediate boys and girls (U17) turn on the Saturday. Liv Busher (coached out of club) was 7th in the javelin and Rose Chesterfield (coach Nick Anderson) ran a pb of 10 mins 13.5 secs to finish 13th in the 3000m. Grace Colmer (coach Andy Fisher) was 12th in the long jump and Charlie Elford-Pond (coach Martin McBriar) collected the club's second medal of the championships by throwing a pb of 48.88m to take the bronze medal in the hammer.
nNo fewer than 6 juniors were in action on Sunday. There was a terrific start to the day as Oscar Webb (coach Tony Bateman) competing for Somerset schools set a huge new pb by jumping 1.75m to claim 4th place in the high jump and go joint 2nd on the club's all time age group record list. Next up, Arabella Wilson (coach Andy Fisher) competing for Surrey schools smashed her own club record by half a second to finish 3rd and take the bronze medal in the 300m, running 40.36 secs. Training partners Lois Moore & Abi Belward (both coached by Andy Fisher) were 16th & 15th respectably in the girl's high jump and the day finished in style with Erin McBriar (coach Martin McBriar) throwing 29.42m to take the bronze medal in the discus with Rosa-May Sprake (coached out of club) just behind her in 4th place with a throw of 29.32m.
nCongratulations to all the athletes who took part and to their coaches.
