Huge medal haul on day 1 at Hampshire champs

The club enjoyed a huge medal haul in glorius sunshine as day 1 of the Hampshire track & field champs took place in Portsmouth yesterday.
nEverywhere you looked, black & gold vests were putting in outstanding performances in the Mountbatten stadium and standing on top of the podium receiving medals.
nStarting with the Senior women, Laura Clark (coach Mark Upton) made her senior championship debut for the club winning 400m gold in a time just outside 60 secs. Jess Gordon (coach Tony Bateman) took high jump gold and Sue Van Vuuren (self coached) was 5th in the 100m.
nFor the senior men, it was great to see Sam Adams (coach Tony Bateman) back in a WADAC vest and he duly won long jump gold with a leap of 6.78m in a high class event. Ben Healey (coach Alex Budd) went under 2 mins to take 800m bronze.
nIn the U20 womens age group, Lily Neate (coach Nick Anderson) dominated the 1500m race to take gold taking seconds off her pb and Grace Colmer (coach Andy Fisher) won HJ gold also with a new PB as well as winning shot putt silver. Jasmine Gordon (coach Martin McBriar) was 5th in the hammer.
nFor the U20 men, Tom Smith (coach Elias Mtshweni) was 5th in his 100m heat just missing out on the final. Sam Roberts (coach Nick Anderson) won the 800m in one of the races of the day, dipping for the line to win by just 2 hundreds of a second, Ben Schofield (coach Nick Anderson) was 5th.
nThe U17 women's age group saw a huge medal haul Talya Wright (coach Dave Sherry) & Mia Judd (sprint coach Gary Bettridge) were 5th in their respective heats of the 100m just missing out on the final but Mia (HJ coach Tony Bateman) had better success in the HJ where she equalled her pb to take gold with Abi Belward (coach Andy Fisher) taking bronze on countback and Amy Wall (coach Andy Fisher) was 4th. Carys Jeffries (coach Andy Fisher) produced a superb finish to take 300m gold. It was a WADAC 1-2-3 in the sprint hurdles as Grace Weeks (coach Gary Bettridge) took gold with Amy Wall taking Silver and Abi Belward bronze in a race where Lucy Smith (coach Gary Bettridge) was 5th. Abi Belward claimed her 3rd medal of the day with shot putt gold with Erin McBriar (coach Martin McBriar) taking bronze. Erin also took silver in the hammer the days first event and Millie Cutts (coach Andy Fisher) went over 10m for the first time in the triple jump to take the silver medal. Over in Kingston at the Surrey county champs, Arabella Wilson (coach Andy Fisher) took HJ gold and shot putt silver both with pb's, the latter smashing the club age group record. Also in Kingston, Tabitha Williamson was 8th in the 100m final.
nFor the U17 men, Fabio Ali-Fogarty (coach Mark Upton) was 7th in the 200m final but the 800m final saw a WADAC 1-2 where Ollie Withers (coach Andy Fisher) pulled away from the field to take the title from Ben Chesterfield (coach Nick Anderson) who was 2nd and Tom Hicks (coach Nick Anderson) making his debut for the club in 5th, Ieuan Thomas (coch Andy Fisher) was 7th in his heat. Sello Mtshweni (coach Elias Mtshweni) leapt to a huge new pole vault pb to take gold, Max Turner (coach Andy Fisher) was 4th in long jump and Harry Jones (coach Martin McBriar) was 6th in javelin.
nThe U15 girls also provided a hatful of medals with possibly the performance of the day coming from Lucia Bertacchini (coach Andy Fisher) who smashed the championship record, going sub 42 secs to win 300m gold also recording an entry standard time for english schools. Training partner Chloe Poore (coach Andy Fisher) took the bronze medal with fellow training partner Isobel Jordon (coach Andy Fisher) in 5th and remarkably all 3 girls will be back in this age group next year. In a busy 100m, Talia Holman (coach Dave Sherry) was 7th in her heat and Isobel Jordon and Tyla Kelly (coach Dave Sherry) were 6th and 7th in their semi-final. Qualifying for the final were Elsie Brindle (coach Dave Sherry) who was 4th and Gracie Osman (coach Andy Fisher) taking bronze. In the 1500m Rosie Sharrock (coach Nick Anderson) was 9th in her heat but all the other girls made the final where Kate Atkinson (coach Nick Anderson) took bronze, Darcy Hawkins (coach Nick Anderson) was 8th and Grace Baker (coach Nick Anderson) was 11th. In the sprint hurdles, Lucia & Gracie took their 2nd medals of the day in 2nd and 3rd respectively with Isobel in 5th and Nyima Sanyang (coach Andy Fisher) in 6th. Nyima was also 7th in HJ and Gracie 6th. Bethany Mballa (coach Heather Sheffield) took shot putt gold followed by Abi McBriar (coach Martin McBriar) in 2nd which was Abi's 2nd medal of the day after winning the hammer title in the days first event.
nFor the U15 boys, Oliver Wye (coach Mark Upton) was 4th in the 100m, Zac Reynolds (coach Andy Fisher) took silver in the 800m where Seth Noott (coach Nick Anderson) was unfortunate to be disqualified for a lane infringement. Zac also took bronze in the long jump. Casper Wilson (coach Nick Anderson) won bronze in the 3000m where training partner Aiden Furby (coach Nick Anderson) was 4th. Samuel Smith (coach Elias Mtshweni) leapt to a new pb to win pole vault gold after earlier finishing 8th in long jump and Sam Nicholson (discus coach Martin McBriar) and Daniel Parr (coach Martin McBriar) were 5th and 8th respectively in discus.
nIn the U13 girls age group, Lile Flute (coach Andy Fisher) was the star of the show drawing gasps from the crowd as she won the 100m and also won the sprint hurdles. Holly Poore (U13 academy) was 7th in her 100m heat and Amalie Calliste (coach Dave Sherry) and Suzanna Ord (coach Paul Cox) both made the final where they were 5th and 6th respectively. Elosie Gill (coach Nick Anderson) and Amber Price (U13 academy) were 3rd and 5th in their 800m heats but Ava Cassia (U13 academy) qualified for today's final. Amber was also 8th in the sprint hurdles final. Poppy Crook (coach Andy Fisher) and Darcey Thorne-Henderson (coach Martin Mcbriar) both won silver medals in the HJ & shot putt respectively.
nIn the U13 boys age group Tom Pate (U13 academy) was 3rd in his 200m heat just missing out on the final and was also 4th in long jump. Tom Price (U13 academy) was 10th in the long jump and 5th in the javelin. Iosu Harfield & Luke Furby (both coached by Paul Cox) qualified for today's 800m final
nA fantastic day's athletics under a blazing sun and we do it all again today. Well done everyone who took part yesterday and good luck for those competing agin or for the first time today.
