Hammer Festival
Last Sunday a number of WADAC throwers and coaches attended the inaugural Hammer Festival in Yate (near Bristol). The event is the brainchild of Matt Spicer one of the UK’s leading hammer throw coaches and was supported by England Athletics. The day consisted of a mix of education, practical and throwing sessions to help develop our young throwers. Pan and Chris (pictured) attended sessions on how plyometrics could help them develop as athletes alongside general strength training. Both boys also had a coaching session led by Bob Broadbridge who is hammer lead for England Athletics on the Youth Talent Programme. Aspen, Winter and Beth then attended a session led by Mick Jones - Commonwealth Games Gold medallist and Olympic Hammer Thrower. This was also attended by WADAC coaches Martin, Heather and Loy and both athletes and coaches took away lots of new ideas to incorporate into their Winter training regimes.
Hammer throwing is a fun event and a great test of co-ordination, agility and speed. WADAC is always looking for more throwers in this event and any young athletes keen to try it out can reach out to Head of Throws Martin at Throws@Wadac.org.uk.
