Annie smashes club mile record
In a very busy weekend of track & field action for the clubs athletes, Annie Mann (coach James Mann) continued her return to top form with a run of 4 mins 40.07 secs in one of the many mile races at the annual David Hemery Valentine International meeting at Boston University on Saturday night. Annie’s finish wasn’t without incident as she fell just before the line and quick thinking saw her do a forward roll over the line to lose just a second or two and record this impressive time which smashes her own club record. Annie also recorded a 1500m time of 4 mins 20.49 secs on the way to her mile record which is a new indoor pb and indoor club record over the distance.
Elsewhere in the States, Amy Wall (coach Andy Fisher) competed at the wonderfully named Indoor Music City challenge meeting in Nashville recorded a long jump distance of 5.24m on Friday night.

It has taken ages for the results to be posted from the London Indoor Games at Lee Valley on Sunday the 26th January. They finally have and this day saw the U15 age group competing after the U17’s had competed the previous day which I have already reported on.
Aspen Stobart (coach Martin McBriar) gets quicker and quicker as the indoor season goes on and recorded a time of 8.17secs to go 2nd on the clubs all time age group lists and still has plenty of time to attempt to break the age group record of 8.13 secs before the indoor season ends.
Leo Davies-Pratt (coach Andy Fisher) ran, jumped & threw on the day getting over 1.40m in the high jump, pushing the shot out to 6.74m and going 3rd on the clubs all time indoor age group lists with a time of 44.43 secs in the 300m.

Also in action stateside, Oliver Thatcher (coach Andy Fisher) completed the indoor heptathlon at the Bass Cragger multi-events invitational in Salem, Virginia on Friday & yesterday. Oliver put together 7 solid events which included a new indoor club record of 12.53m in the shot putt and finished with a final points total of 4886 points just 28 points behind his lifetime best.

Michael Chiguware was 5th in the same heat in 25.06 secs on his debut in a WADAC vest. Elsie’s run was something of a tell your grandchildren moment as she ran in the same race as young athlete 800m sensation Phoebe Gill who ran an incredible 53.65 without starting blocks and goodness knows what she will run in the 800m this year.

WADAC athletes open their indoor season
A number of WADAC athletes opened their indoor seaso at the BFTTA Open Meeting in Lee Valley on Sunday. This was a World Athletics accredited meeting meaning that performances of a certain standard for age groups and events at U18, U20 & Senior level will appear on World Athletics toplists. These lists are valid for indoor (short track as it is called these days) and outdoor performances and begin on the 1st January each year in much the same as pof10 does. World athletics age groups work in calender years and whilst the England Athletics age groups are changing to even years (U12, U14, U16, U18) from April 2026 this will still work on a school year rather than a calender year basis.

It’s always nice to compete in the New Year’s day Open meeting at Lee Valley as it gets you on the new years rankings lists and also put the first WADAC marks down of the New Year.
Aspen Stoddart (coach Martin McBriar) had that honour this year as she competed in the indoor sprint races on Wednesday.
Aspen and her sister Winter are very talented throwers that have joined the club towards the end of last year with Aspen also being a sprinter a she showed with times of 8.44 secs over the 60m & 28.47 secs over the 200m.
Three time olympian Lawrence Okoye competes in Winchester
Winchester and District Athletics Club Throws Squad recently held a Throws development meeting to provide additional competition opportunity in the Discus and Hammer events. The event was a huge success with a number of PB’s and opportunity for some younger throwers to try out the events for the first time. In addition the squad were delighted to welcome 3 x Olympian and British record holder in the Discus Lawrence Okoye to the event. Lawrence has been having a fantastic season this year – following his appearance at the Paris Olympics in the summer Lawrence recently threw 67m at a European competition in Zagreb (the 3rd longest throw by a British male in history) and following this Lawrence wanted to see if he could get close to breaking his British record of 68m in Winchester. Lawrence finished the WADAC event with a best throw on the day of 62m – one of the longest throws ever seen in Winchester and a fantastic experience for all the WADAC throwers to see him performing up close.
Throwing in Winchester is going from strength to strength and the club boasts 5 throws athletes who have gained international honours in recent years. Based on the 2023 season the WADAC Throws squad was ranked 3rd in the UK based on overall numbers of athletes appearing in the UK Top 20 rankings. Throws Head coach Martin McBriar said ‘we’re really excited to be building a strong in-depth throws community here at Winchester. Having Lawrence come and compete was a fantastic experience for all our athletes and coaches – he was happy to pose for some photos with the athletes after the competition and generously gave some advice to the younger throwers also which I know they all appreciated. With lead coaches Heather Sheffield and Jeremy Clifton we have a strong team but are always on the look out for more talent to join the squad – both athletes and coaches.
